Eremitic Life In The Ayuda River Basin

(LAñO and Faido)

The tour starts in the small town of Laño, Treviño, with the archaeological sites of Las Gobas and Santorkaria. The guided visit takes place in Santorkaria. Evidence of human presence since the 6th century will be shown here, a time when eremites inhabited the small caves. In the 6th century, they were occupied by a village and turned into houses, churches, and warehouses. Residents left in the 19th century and the archaeological sites were used as cemeteries after that.

After the first visit, we will drop by the small town of Faido and visit the hermitage of Our Lady of Peña. This chapel is considered the oldest active temple in the Basque Country and is made up of several spaces built in the High Middle Ages.
